A Frameless Shower Door is Within Reach
Thursday, September 24th, 2009One nice thing about frameless shower doors is that you don’t necessarily need the entire frameless shower enclosure. It’s possible to install the frameless door alone.
So, you tend to find frameless shower doors in two settings:
- Full frameless glass shower enclosures – You’ve seen these. They are three- or four-sided glass boxes. They look cool because they don’t have any kind of metal framing.
- Frameless shower doors alone – These have three sides of tiled shower, plus a fourth side–the door–which is a frameless shower door.
- The odd-balls – With slabs of glass, you can do practically anything. The Dreamline Aqua frameless pictured here doesn’t really fit into any category, and I wasn’t even sure if I should include it in the frameless doors category. Yeah, it’s a door (to the right side) but it’s also a sheet of glass (left) that acts as a partial enclosure for the shower-tub.
I was surprised when I first started looking at the range of prices for frameless shower doors. I thought that everything would be $1,000 and upward. Sure, you can spend $1,000 or more, but plenty (and in fact the majority) are in the $500-$700 range.
You may want to bite the bullet and hire a professional bath remodeler to install your frameless door. Two reasons: 1.) They are heavy; 2.) There is little tolerance for error. Just a thought.

Scotch Tough Duct Tape vs. All Other Duct Tapes
Thursday, September 24th, 2009O duct tape! What has become of you?
After your strong beginnings as the taper of ducts–for professionals only!–you saw a slow decline from the Eighties onward.
First there were the el cheapo duct tapes. Then the embarrassing Duck Tape brand of duct tapes. Then books like Ducktigami: The Art of the Tape and The Jumbo Duct Tape Book (sorry, no links–you’ll have to find these lousy books yourself). Then duct tape wallets. Then, then…
But 3M/Scotch is aiming to bring duct tape back to its roots–tough and not for the hoi polloi–with its Scotch Tough Duct Tape line.
See, you really don’t want that buck-a-roll duct tape hanging on the end display at your local Ace. That stuff is for wimps. Within hours, it crumbles into dust. Do you think that coal miners would be caught dead with Duck Brand duct tape in their hands?
I checked out five versions of Scotch Tough Duct Tape, and my conclusion is that it is what it claims. It is a bit pricey. But it does come from Scotch (3M), and it’s about as tough as duct tape can get.
So, you may not use it for taping your child’s artwork to the wall, but you will use it for actual home remodeling tasks, like painting, plumbing, duct work, flashing, and so on.
